Bio

I was born and raised in Southern California, attending a private, Catholic school from first through eighth grade. Never once did I think of myself as elite or different. That was school, a place I went Monday through Friday for hours when I could have been doing what any normal child does, climbing trees, figuring out ways to drive my parents nuts, or riding my bike, without safety gear since we didn’t even know what that was in the 1960s. We made hopscotch’s on the sidewalk with chalk and played for hours. Riding a bike up and down a sidewalk was often accompanied by jump ramps where we attempted to fly beyond gravity to reach the moon, like the astronauts we so admired. Skateboards whizzing past were not unheard of, again without safety equipment. Sure, we skinned knees and elbows and bumped heads but we were up and running within the few minutes it took our mothers to clean up the mess and advise us to ‘be more careful next time’.

After my son saw the news, showing your picture (California Supreme Court Chief Justices Tani Cantil-Sakauye )and saying that $30 million is missing, he said, “Mom, you do not want to go there. You are telling one fox that another fox raided the hen house. What are you thinking?” I told him, “I agree with you, but they are still researching there. Would you like to send them a message? You never know – maybe someone will hear you.” And he wrote, “. I am Saam, I am a child who put up with all of your abuses I have no vote, no say or voice, yet I think I matter. will you tell them that child abuse destroys our future? Now would you listen to me? I have more scars than friends.” the rage is on, tell your story too, mayday

Bone Song won the Liam Rector First Prize for Poetry in 2014. The prize included publication and copies will be available from April 2015.

Sarah Kennedy nailed the essence of the book in her jacket blurb. Bone Song IS about scars, about how childhood leaves its mark on us forever. Some of those marks become silvery with time, more shadow than scar. Some remain livid. Others, like oysters building pearl around the irritation of sand, form layers of padding against future damage.

B.A. Goodjohn’s first novel, Sticklebacks and Snow Globes (Permanent Press) made the Kirkus Best of 2007 list. Her second novel, The Beginning Things (Underground Voices) is due for publication in November 2015. Her collection, Bone Song, won the 2014 Liam Rector First Book Prize for Poetry and will be published through Briery Creek Press (Longwood University) in April 2015. She teaches English at Randolph College in Lynchburg, Virginia and is the Director of the Writing Program and Tutoring Services. She has also published poetry and fiction in various literary journals including The Texas Review, Zone 3 and Connecticut Review. http://www.bagoodjohn.com

“Most of the time, for me, writing is about sitting down and tapping on a keyboard. It’s not fun, and I can tap for hours before a decent word, let alone a line, appears on the screen. But sometimes, something happens when I’m at the keyboard. I start to type and I think it’s going to be one of those tapping days, and suddenly, it starts. It’s almost audible. Like something crawls up onto my shoulder and whispers, “go go go go go go go go go” in my ear and then slides away. And I pause for a moment, then the words and images start piling up in that weird place between my ears and my eyes, and then they’re there, on the screen and I don’t really feel as if I’m the one typing them but I’m the only one in the room, the only one with my fingers on the keys and the words are about me and mine and people I’ve never ever met before…it’s magical. That’s why I do it.”
